š First Date Safety Checklist - 27 Tips That Could Save Your Life
After hearing too many horror stories and having my own close calls, I've created this comprehensive safety checklist. Print it, save it, share it - these aren't just tips, they're potentially life-saving practices.
Before the Date
Background Check Basics
ā Google his full name + city, job, school ā Check court records - Most counties have online databases ā Sex offender registry - Takes 30 seconds, could save your life ā Social media audit - Look for consistent history, not new accounts ā Reverse image search his photos ā Get his phone number - Not just app messaging
The Safety Setup
ā Tell 3 people - Where, when, who, and his photo ā Share your location - Turn on indefinitely with a trusted friend ā Set check-in times - "I'll text you at 8 PM and 10 PM" ā Create a code word - One for "come get me" and one for "call 911" ā Plan your exit - Know how you're getting home BEFORE you leave
Choosing the Location
Safe Places ā
- Popular coffee shops
- Busy restaurants
- Public parks during daylight
- Shopping centers
- Mini golf/bowling/public activities
NEVER First Date Locations ā
- His place
- Your place
- His car
- Isolated hiking trails
- Private movie theaters
- Anywhere serving only alcohol
- "Surprise" locations he won't tell you
During the Date
Transportation Safety
ā Drive yourself or use YOUR Uber/Lyft ā Park in well-lit areas near other cars ā Never get in his car on first date ā Don't let him know your address yet ā Keep your keys accessible
Personal Safety
ā Keep phone charged (bring portable charger) ā Don't leave drinks unattended - Even water ā Order your own food/drinks - Watch them being made ā Limit alcohol - Max 2 drinks, eat first ā Trust your gut - Bad feeling = leave immediately
Red Flag Emergency Exits
If you need to leave:
- "I'm not feeling well" ā Go to bathroom ā Leave
- Have a friend call with "emergency"
- Be direct: "This isn't working for me. I'm leaving."
- Ask restaurant staff for help if needed
The Digital Safety Layer
Before Meeting
ā Take screenshot of his profile ā Screenshot conversations (evidence if needed) ā Don't give full name/workplace yet ā Use Google Voice number initially ā Turn off geotagging on photos you send
During Date
ā Check-in with your safety buddy ā Post a subtle Instagram story (creates timeline) ā Keep location sharing ON ā Don't post real-time locations publicly
Advanced Safety Tactics
The Background Recording Trick
- Start voice memo before date
- Phone in pocket/purse still records
- Saved me once when he got aggressive
The Fake Call App
- Schedule fake call 30 minutes in
- Easy out if date is bad
- Or ignore if going well
The Safety Selfie
- Take selfie together early
- Send to friend immediately
- Creates evidence you were together
Warning Signs to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY
šØ Aggression - Road rage, rude to staff, short temper šØ Pushing boundaries - Won't accept "no" to anything šØ Isolation attempts - Suggests going somewhere private šØ Excessive drinking - Pressures you to drink more šØ Lies - Catches him in obvious lies šØ Control - Orders for you, makes all decisions šØ Love bombing - Way too intense too fast šØ Gut feeling - Something feels wrong
Post-Date Protocol
If Date Went Well
- Still don't share address immediately
- Continue meeting in public for dates 2-5
- Verify his stories match over time
- Keep friends updated on progression
If Something Felt Wrong
- Block on all platforms
- Document everything (screenshots)
- Tell friends (he might target them)
- Report to dating app
- Consider reporting to police if threatened
My Personal Story
I ignored these rules once. He seemed "so nice" online. Agreed to let him pick me up (mistake #1), didn't tell anyone details (mistake #2), ignored my gut feeling (mistake #3).
He drove me to an isolated area "to see the city lights." When I asked to leave, he got angry. Only got away because I'd shared my location with my sister who called police when I stopped responding.

This is so helpful! I went through something similar and wish I had seen this earlier. The part about documentation really resonated with me.
